How to Play Roulette
Roulette comes from the French word for wheel and is appropriate because the game itself is played using a large wheel that is spun. The wheel consists of numbers and colors. The numbers range from one to thirty six and are arranged through the wheel not in sequential order. The colors alternate between black and red. There is typically a zero number that is green and some casinos also have an additional double zero also in green.
The numbers all have slots. The wheel is spun in one direction and then a small white ball is launched around the wheel in the opposite direction. The croupier will then calculate the winnings for each bet that was successful. The amount of payout depends on the type of bet and is calculated based on probability. The less probability there is of a result occurring, the riskier the bet and the higher the payout. The two basic types of bets are inside bets and outside bets.
Roulette Inside Bets
A few possible inside bets include the following:
Straight up – Thirty five to one odds betting on one number
Split – You bet on two numbers, paying out seventeen to one
Line bet – Eleven to one odds for betting on three numbers within a horizontal line
Square – Eight to one odds for a bet on four numbers placed in a square on the table
Basket – Six to one odds for betting on zero or double zero with four other numbers
Double street – Five to one odds for six numbers
Roulette Outside Bets
Outside bets consist of all the possibilities of bets that are made outside the number boxes on the betting table. Some possibilities include:
Red or black – Even odds on whether red or black will come up
Odd or even – Even odds on whether it will be an odd or even number
Dozen – Two to one odds on betting on twelve consecutive numbers, one to thirty six
Column – Two to one odds on twelve non consecutive numbers in a single column
Because of the many options for betting on roulette and the various odds for each bet, it can be a difficult game to master. However, it can also be a lot of fun. Most people around a table will help you and the croupier is also typically very willing to assist. It is best to start off on a table that is not very busy to learn the game and get assistance.
